A segment of the public has expressed worry of forgeries of the highly discussed Coronavirus treatment herb, COVIDEX following its approval for use today, June 29 by the National Drug Authority (NDA).

With a lot of counterfeited drugs witnessed on the market, some people have extended the plight to the herbal drug, saying that the COVIDEX could also fall victim of duplication on the market, as the equal scramble for treatment and quick money, heightens amidst the lockdown.

Innovated by a notable researcher and senior lecturer at Mbarara University of Science and Technology – Prof Patrick Ogwang, the herbal drug (COVIDEX) includes the berberine plant as an active ingredient and its effectiveness has been proven in COVID-19 studies done.

Berberine has also been used in treatments for diabetes and liver disease, according to scientists.

The innovator also indicated that the drug was re-designed and re-purposed from a product which was initially for toothache and mouth Hygiene due to its strong anti-viral components extracted from medicinal plants.

It is reported that drug was already highly selling in communities  even before its approval by NDA.
