After an arduous eight-year journey marked by resilience, sacrifice, and an unyielding commitment to the fight for accessible education, David Musiri has graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Makerere University. His story is not just a tale of academic success but a testament to the power of persistence in the face of adversity.
Musiri’s journey began in 2017 when he was admitted to Makerere University, one of Uganda’s most prestigious institutions. However, his time at the university was far from ordinary. A staunch advocate for affordable education, Musiri became a central figure in the opposition against the 15% tuition increment policy introduced by the university.
His activism came at a high personal cost. Over the years, Musiri was arrested more than five times and suspended from the university on four occasions for his unwavering stance against the fee hike. In 2018, his fight reached international attention when the Chinese Embassy withdrew his scholarship at Makerere due to his leadership in demonstrations.
The challenges did not end there. In 2019, while in custody for protesting, Musiri received the heartbreaking news of his father’s passing. Despite the immense personal loss, he remained resolute in his fight for what he believed was a just cause.
His efforts were not in vain. In 2022, the Makerere University Council halted the contentious fees policy, a significant victory for students and a moment that cemented Musiri’s legacy as a trailblazer in the fight for accessible education in Uganda.
Today, Musiri’s triumph is complete as he dons his graduation gown, celebrating a Bachelor of Commerce degree after eight long years. His journey serves as an inspiration to many, highlighting the importance of courage, determination, and standing up for what is right, even when the odds are stacked against you.
Congratulations, David Musiri. Your story is a reminder that true change often requires sacrifice and resilience. You leave Makerere not just as a graduate but as a symbol of hope for accessible education for all.
