Following his defeat in Saturday’s Nkumba Guild Presidential elections, NRM candidate Opira “Opra” Otaremwa has vowed to file a petition against the recent Election results.
Opira who lost the election by 74 votes to Sunday Amagule (an Independent Candidate) alleges that a number of illegalities took place throughout the election process and that his petition will focus on them.
One of the alleged “illegalities” according to him, is the ammendement of a clause that required voters to have paid at least 40% of the tuition fees. This was reduced to 20% when protests broke out just hours before the election.
“The Electoral Commission brought the 20% policy to favour other candidates. The policy was changed at 11pm and we didn’t have time to inform our voters. People who weren’t supposed to vote, voted and this affected the election in a substantial manner” said Opira.
During Friday night’s meeting between the contestants, EC chairman Patrick Ipalat, Dean of students Christopher Kimuli and University Bursar Benard Zimbe, Opira said he opposed the policy change but was quashed by the majority vote.
A decision he believes should have been made by parliament. Opira affirmed to Campus Bee that he will file a petition and it will most likely be a compensation surprise.
