Mastercard Foundation has provided USD $1 million which is approximately 3.7 billion shillings to Makerere University as a contribution to support the restoration of MAK’s iconic main building which was gutted by fire last week.
In a letter dated 25th September, 2020 that is addressed to the Vice Chancellor of Makerere University, Professor Barnabas Nawangwe, the President and CEO of the foundation expresses grief and pain due to “such a big loss,” something that compelled them to support the restoration of the building.
” I was saddened to learn about the fire at Makerere University and the extensive damage to the iconic building, our hearts go out to you ” reads an extract from the letter.
According to the Mastercard Foundation, they are hopeful that the contribution offered makes the reopening of the University faster and builds resiliency as Makerere continues to educate future leaders.
It should be noted that Mastercard foundation provides scholarships to academically talented young Africans to pursue undergraduate studies at Makerere University.
