Members of Parliament in a select committee investigating the sexual harassment vice in institutions of higher learning have advised lecturers to send away students who show up for lectures indecently dressed.

The committee, which is chaired by Gomba West MP Robinah Rwakoojo revealed the tough advice while interacting with lecturers and lawmakers at Makerere University. Rwakoojo added that they believe indecent dressing is the main cause of sexual harassment at campus.

However, the Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MUASA) chairperson, Dr. Deus Kamunyu Muhwezi told the MPs that it is impossible to implement such a rule since the university lacks a policy on dress code.

The nine member select committee was set up by the Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Rebecca Kadaga to study the causes of sexual violence/harassment in higher institutions and its negative effects on the population.

The committee was also tasked to study and review laws against sexual violence in Uganda as well as the available policies that can be used to end sexual violence in educational institutions.
