In the world of competitive academia and sports, dreams are often built on hard work, passion, and dedication.
A team of Petroleum Engineering students from Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) is a shining example of such dedication, having earned the title of Ugandan champions and securing second place in the Africa region’s Petrobowl competition.
They were named second in the African regional qualifiers held in Accra, Ghana, earning them a coveted spot in the World Petrobowl Championships.
Their tireless efforts had not only brought them glory but also an opportunity to represent their nation on the global stage at the World Petrobowl Championships in Texas, USA starting on October 16th, 2023.
However, a bitter twist has dampened their excitement as they face an unexpected hurdle – a denied US visa.
According to the participants, their hard-earned opportunity to showcase their skills on an international platform is now hanging in the balance due to circumstances beyond their control.
The denial of the US visa application has not only shattered their dreams but also left an indelible impact on the team members.
“We did our part, we trained daily and we were ready. Our focus is on performing as much as we can, we will try to do it online, although it’s almost next to impossible we believe God has the best intentions for us,” a participant said.
The reasons behind the denial of the visa still remains uncertain as the participants were not provided with a detailed explanation.
PetroBowl is a competitive quiz competition in the oil and gas industry. It tests participants’ knowledge of petroleum engineering, industry history, and related topics.
Teams of students from universities worldwide compete in a fast-paced, single-elimination format to answer questions and demonstrate their expertise in the field. It is a popular event in the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) and is a platform for networking and learning within the industry.
