We had earlier on reported that KYU had taken another unique step to introduce e-voting, an initiative that has never been taken up by any university in Uganda.
Last week, the system that is being spearheaded by the acting university dean Ms. Mildred Tibananuka was for the second time presented to the GRC house as they were discussing the guidelines of the forthcoming elections. However, it seems like the students’ leaders also couldn’t have the system passed until sensitization is done around the student’s fraternity.
However, the resurfacing of e-voting hasn’t been welcomed by some students who in the first place thought it was just a rumour or joke not until tents for sensitation were erected earlier this week.
Students have expressed mixed reactions with some boycotting to visit these e-voting tents meant for sensitisation. Students have also used WhatsApp groups as platforms to tarnish and discuss the disgrace that’s beneath this whole system. They allege this voting system hasn’t come to help but rather it is another forum for the administration to swindle students’ money.
Below is one of the missives (published as received) by Bahati Fahad, A Kyambogo university student that’s circulating around Kyambogo WhatsApp groups.
“THE E-VOTING SAGA!!!! KYU
***********
Friends, comrades and student leaders I greet you in the name of peace , democracy , tranquillity and freedom.
With sincere and heartfelt gratitude I wish to thank God first for the far he has brought us!!
Fellow students and student leaders need to know the major reason as to why we came to campus, fine these activities of voting are part of campus activities but of a lesser weight towards our academics, you have E-voting being established thats worth a billion Ugandan shillings yet you haven’t introduced E-library yet!!!!! Does it really make sense????? Our libraries do not have adequate and different textbooks required for our academics, E-library would have been the solution in this case but E-voting seems to be more important in this case!!!
Talk of the current E-campus which has never displayed our results at any time, we still figit to look out for our marks on noticeboards , the system has very many loopholes that need to be sorted out, students clear the campus fees but still their portals display that they havnt paid yet , not registered!!! so instead of focusing on how to rectify this system , all the mafias are thinking is to introduce this E-Voting project and still large sums of students money but remember this is the money our parents fight through thick and thin!!!
to raise .
When sports fee was introduced we thought it would be used in that sector but not any sports facility has been developed yet!!! guess that is now the money channelled to E-voting but I can assure you the students will not accept their money to be wasted this time!!!
E-voting would be appropriate if the university has provided reliable WiFi internet but a package of 700GB will never be stable and reliable at all hence the regular break offs!!!
Lastly I would like to appreciate the speaker and a certain group of hon GRC’s who have stood up on their feet and rejected the Evil-voting but again I am aware of that group of 20 GRC’s that were compromised in a certain location outside campus by some administrators to allow the system and pass it over in their meetings, I warn you and you should come up and apologise to the students you lead because I will unleash your evil acts in case if you haven’t !!!,
Thank you!!
