EACOP Rolls Out Scholarships for Makerere, Kyambogo Engineering Students

KAMPALA – The East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) has launched a scholarship program targeting engineering students from Makerere and Kyambogo universities, aiming to boost local participation in Uganda’s oil and gas sector.

The scheme, introduced in partnership with Tier One contractor China Petroleum Pipeline (CPP), will support 28 students who are academically strong but face financial challenges. According to EACOP, preference was given to applicants from the 10 districts along the pipeline route, with seven beneficiaries drawn directly from these areas.

“The initiative is part of our national content strategy, ensuring that Ugandan talent is prepared to take up opportunities in the oil and gas sector,” the company said in a statement.

The selection process considered academic performance, financial background, and commitment to community service. Kyambogo University confirmed 18 beneficiaries, while the remaining awards went to Makerere students.

The scholarship program, first announced in July 2025, will run for three years, covering tuition and other academic expenses.

  • Taken on 82 graduate trainees under its skills development program.
  • Delivered 532 hours of technical training for lecturers, professors, and technicians under a “Train the Trainer” initiative.
  • Partnered with Makerere, Kyambogo, Uganda Petroleum Institute Kigumba (UPIK), and the Institute of Surveyors of Uganda to strengthen skills transfer.

EACOP is currently constructing the world’s longest heated crude oil pipeline, stretching from Hoima in western Uganda to Tanga in Tanzania. Company officials stress that investing in local skills is central to ensuring Ugandans benefit from the multibillion-dollar project.
