On 30th November 2022, the Vice Chancellor hosted a delegation from the East African Court of Justice and Members of the Legal Fraternity.
The President of the East African Court of Justice, Hon.Justice Nestor Kayobera led the delegation.
The Hon. Justices visited Makerere University to engage the academia in promoting Justice in the East African Community integration agenda.
Welcoming the Justices to Makerere University, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe commended the delegation for visiting when Makerere University was celebrating 100 years of existence (1922-2022). In a presentation, Prof. Nawangwe highlighted the transformation of Makerere University over the years.
The Vice Chancellor underscored that the university exists to transform communities through identification of development challenges and coming up with tangible solutions. In line with national and global challenges, Makerere University will work with partners to focus on the following challenges: Rapid population growth, Youth unemployment, Climate Change, Food Insecurity, Emerging Diseases and Conflict.
The Head of the delegation, Justice Kayobera congratulated Makerere University upon its centennial celebrations. He disclosed that the East African Court of Justice was also celebrating its 21st anniversary.
“Today, 30th November 2022 is an extra ordinary day. Today, the East African Court of Justice is celebrating its 21st anniversary. So, the Court is celebrating its 21st anniversary at Makerere University.”
Noting that most of the members of the delegation were proud alumni of Makerere University, the President Judge saluted the institution for it’s great contribution in legal training, capacity building and practice.
After an informative engagement with the university management, the delegation toured an exhibition of research outputs and innovations under the Makerere University Research and Innovations Fund.
According to Mr Luke Ogwal, an innovator of Stingless Bees said due to the growing population, there’s fear that there will be no space to keep honey bees.
“We can stay with stingless bees in our communities without harming us. They have the potential to produce all the essential products expected from bees,” he said.
Mr Ogwal added that these bees are scarce but they can be found in the environment and plans are underway to naturally multiply them.
Other innovations include powdered amaranthas, powdered eggs, Online course to kick Sexual Harassment out of Higher Institutions of learning among others.
The delegation toured Makerere University Library with particular interest in the Law Section. The University Librarian, Dr. Helen Byamugisha highlighted the central role of the University Library in teaching, learning and research.
The delegation then moved to Makerere University School of Law were they had an engagement with the leadership, staff and students.
