The chairman Uganda Electoral Commission Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi has urged Kabale University students to refrain from hate speech and violence during the forthcoming election period.
Byabakama told the youth to use their data productively to conduct research and expand their knowledge instead of disseminating hate speech on social media.
The EC boss made the remarks during a public lecture at the Kabale University on the role of youth in universities and tertiary institutions in the electoral process in Uganda. Byabakama was a keynote speaker at the public lecture.
He said youth form the largest percentage of participants in election campaigns and are often exploited by some individuals who don’t have the country’s best interests at heart.
“The youth form the largest percentage of participants in election campaigns and are often exploited by individuals who do not have the country’s best interests at heart,” he said.
He added that “it is crucial for you to work towards a united, stable, peaceful, and prosperous Uganda committed to socio-economic transformation.”
The EC boss noted that “Universities are key to nurturing responsible citizens who will shape the future of our nation”.
The public lecture comes at a time when Uganda is gearing up for the 2026 general elections that will be manned by Justice Simon Byabakama’s led Electoral Commission. Electoral processes leading to the elections are expected to commence next month.
