Kampala, Uganda — Award-winning Ugandan musician Eddy Kenzo has revealed that he has returned to school, saying the decision is driven by personal growth, responsibility, and the need to secure his future beyond music, not political ambition.
Speaking in a recent interview, Kenzo disclosed that he successfully sat for and passed his mature entry examinations and has since enrolled at university.
“I did mature entry education and I passed very well. I am also now doing university,” Kenzo said.
The BET and MTV award-winning artist was quick to distance his academic pursuit from politics, despite his frequent appearances at political events and alongside figures associated with the ruling National Resistance Movement.
“I am not a politician and I do not want to engage in active politics. My going back to school is for personal growth,” he clarified.
Kenzo explained that his decision was largely inspired by his children, noting that he wants to set a strong example at home and emphasize the importance of education.
“I want to show my kids the right way and attach value to education. They won’t be managing my businesses for me forever,” he said.
Looking ahead, the singer described education as a long-term investment, especially as he plans for life beyond performing on stage.
“This is something I am doing for myself, especially in my 40s and 50s, because I won’t be jumping on stage forever,” Kenzo added.
While separating his studies from politics, Kenzo did not shy away from sharing his political views. He said his exposure through international travel has shaped his perspective on leadership and governance in Uganda.
“I have traveled and seen how other countries are run. When I focus back on Uganda, I believe Museveni has led the country well and does not need any change,” he said.
Kenzo’s comments come amid public debate about his political stance, especially following his past association with opposition figure Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, during the early days of his music career. Over time, the singer has increasingly aligned himself with government initiatives, a shift that has drawn mixed reactions from fans and political observers.
Despite the controversy, Kenzo maintains that his return to school is a personal journey, aimed at self-improvement, family responsibility, and preparing for a future beyond entertainment.
