Hostel life was brought to a stand-still after students living in hostels around Mbarara University of Science and Technology woke up to what you can call a ‘storm’ after electricity destroyed millions of property and other electronic appliances including but not limited to, TVs, Phones, Laptops, fridges.
It is reported that power started showing signs of fluctuating on Friday and ordinarily, not much attention was given to it. In the wee hours of Sunday morning the power increased beyond the recommended 220 volts destroying appliances. The most affected areas include TASO village, Kashanyarazi, which contain roughly 70% of the MUST student population.
Chance Isaac a student and resident of TASO village says that he lost his newly bought television set to the power surge. He says immediately his television set blew, his laptop power adapter stopped functioning adding that, his neighbors also experienced the same problem.
Chance also adds that, although the problem started around Saturday morning, UMEME technicians had failed to intervene by Sunday putting them at more risks.
This leaves students in a huge dilemma because they’ve lost laptops which greatly helped them do their course works and revision for the fact that mid semester exams are two weeks away.
