As is the norm, the Makerere University Guild Electoral Commission receives nominations from interested candidates in the guild race and subjects them to several checks of eligibility including the academic checks done by the office of the Academic Registrar.
This year, twelve candidates submitted forms after payment of a non-refundable Shs. 200,000 fee to subject themselves to the vetting that would pave way for them to join the contest for the highest position in the guild politics of the Ivory Tower.
Out of the twelve however, only one failed to meet the stated qualifications for contesting that include among others registration as a student, a minimum CGPA of 2.8 and no pending retake.
“Mwesiga Milton (a third year Bachelor of Journalism and Communication student) is the only one among those who picked forms that didn’t meet the qualifications, Kato Martin the PRO of the electoral commission said in a statement.
Among the ones verified are NRM’s Andrew Taliwaku, FDC’s Milly Namuddu, and DP’s Julius Kateregga.
The independent candidates are David Musiri, Emmanuel Agaba, Joshua Mukisa, Winter Nsimire, Osbert Arinda, George Mutumba, Donald Munanu and Umar Wageya.
Campaigns for the guild race kick off on Friday 1st March with a rally at Complex Hall and will end with voting on Friday 15th March.
