A research done by the Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) has revealed that most students at Makerere University are making negative sexual choices due to fear and financial pressure.
“Students have been making negative sexual choices driven by fear and financial pressure, among other reasons,” said New Vision’s Barbara Kaija.
Kaija said the research revealed that 53.7% of first-year students are making positive sexual choices.
“A baseline survey at Makerere revealed that 53.7% of first-year students are making positive sexual choices, with 37.8% still virgins. However, 46.3% are facing pressures leading to negative choices,” she said.
Among the interviewed first year students, 37.8% were virgins and among continuing students, 36.6% were virgins and an equally good number were secondary virgins.
The report was presented during the launch of the Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) on Friday at Makerere University. The program was launched by first lady and minister of Education and Sports Hon. Janet Museveni Kataaha.
Janet told Makerere University students to say no to sexual immorality, substance abuse and alcohol.
“Don’t waste your opportunity for education by prioritizing short-term personal gratification over future opportunities and your career path. Please say no to sexual immorality and being lured into drinking alcohol and indulging in substance abuse,” she said.
The ELP program will be rolled out to other higher institutions of learning as part of Janet Museveni’s efforts to fight corruption and HIV/AIDS.
