Red Pepper founder Arinaitwe Rugyendo has expressed concerns about the quality of Makerere University graduates due to the rampant strikes at the oldest university in the nation.
Rugyendo, himself an alumnus of the university said the never-fading strike clouds at Makerere leave employers wondering whether students actually get time to study.
“For the three years I was here, we only had a strike once. It was to advocate for the re-opening of Northcote and we were serious about it. But it was only once,” Rugyendo reminisced.
Nowadays, he said, strikes are the order of the day – a situation he said is degrading of the best institution of higher learning in East Africa.
“If you have noticed, whenever there is a strike I always take my time off on the social media platforms to discourage you from participating,” he added.
He encouraged the students to desist from riots and concentrate on reading their books if they are to make it in life.
Rugyendo was speaking at the handover ceremony of Mbarara Makerere University Students’ Association (MBAMUSA) which took place at the university guest house in Makerere.
Officiating at the same function, Capt. Arinaitwe Kagame rallied final year students to make use of the connections they have now so as to determine their course of life after campus.
He urged them to know what they want in life.
“For me, even my mother says the toys I used to play with were guns. Before I was done with university, they were looking for me to join the army,” he said lightly.
Keynote addresses were from K. Muhumuza from the Admissions Office of Makerere, Charles Odongtho of NBS and Capt. Arinaitwe Kagame.
Rugyendo is the patron of the said association.
