Yesterday was a busy day at Makerere University, because the guys who brought sexuality to porridge night were having a dialogue at the prestigious university and many students did attend. The Inter – University dialogue on Sexuality happens every year and yesterday was the second anniversary.
Apart from the fact that it did trend online and was rated number 5 by South African trends, many people did attend including the vibrant and open minded Hon. Miria Matembe who was one of the panelists for the dialogue. Prof. Edward Kirumira of MUK was also in attendance and so were many prominent people who are passionate about sexuality, sex, and sexual health.
The main question of the day was; “What do you understand by sexuality? ”
Although many students blamed their parents for transferring the responsibility of teaching them about sex to schools and maids and the internet, Hon. Matembe advised them to actually be thankful. “If I am to teach my child about sex, I would do it the way I was brought up and that wouldn’t be efficient, so if your parent transfers the responsibility to more qualified people, then be thankful,” she said.
It was fun, especially the afternoon session that started with a skit and a dance that left everyone happy and clapping.. According to Hon. Matembe, the dance portrayed sex and was not something she would let her kids watch. The dialogue was not only fruitful but it left many students empowered and knowledgeable about sex, sexuality and sexual health.
“A dialogue like this should be organised every after 5 months and also taken to all universities in Uganda, it’s worth it” said Jonathan a student of IT at Makerere University.
“I always feared to test for HIV but today when I saw many people line up, I was like, to hell with fear I am doing this and I checked negative so I am taking myself for a beer” narrated Cynthia a student of Law at UCU.
To sum it all up, it was a fun, educative event that left many students looking forward to the next event. The conversation can still go on online using the hashtag #IUDug15.
