Makerere University has issued a strong warning against acts of student violence following chaotic scenes at Mitchell Hall of Residence, where police were called in to break up confrontations among students.

In an official statement released by Dr. Winifred Kabumbuli, the Dean of Students, the University condemned the violence, reaffirming its commitment to maintaining peace and safety on campus.

“Every member of the University community deserves to live without fear of violence and harassment,” Dr. Kabumbuli said. “Violence of any kind is unacceptable and has no place at Makerere University.”

According to the statement, police intervention helped prevent injuries, and an investigation has been launched to identify and take disciplinary action against those responsible. The University has promised to enforce its rules and regulations strictly once the probe concludes.

The memo, dated October 21, 2025, was copied to the Vice Chancellor, Deputy Vice Chancellors, University Secretary, Director of Legal Affairs, Chief Security Officer, and the Guild President — signaling the administration’s unified stance against the violence.

Dr. Kabumbuli also urged students to refrain from any acts of aggression or harassment and to promptly report incidents to University Management for swift action.

“We call upon all students to exercise restraint, resolve disputes peacefully, and respect one another as members of the same community,” the statement emphasized.

The violence reportedly broke out at Mitchell Hall, one of Makerere’s most prominent male residences, late last week. The cause of the clashes remains unclear, but witnesses described heated confrontations that escalated before police arrived to restore calm.

This incident adds to ongoing concerns about student discipline and safety in halls of residence across the university.

Makerere University says it is determined to ensure that all students — regardless of their background or residence — can study and live in an environment free from fear, intimidation, or violence.

As investigations continue, the administration has reaffirmed that peace and mutual respect remain non-negotiable values of the Makerere community.
