President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has appointed Dr. Crispus Kiyonga as the new Makerere University Chancellor, the institution’s vice chancellor has revealed.
The former Minister of Defense replaces Dr. Ezra Seruma who has been in the position for over a decade.
In a post on X, Prof. Nawangwe congratulated Dr. Kiyonga and welcomed him to the service of Makerere University.
“His Excellency the President of Uganda has appointed Dr. Crispus Kiyonga as the new Chancellor of Makerere University. On behalf of Makerere University Council, I extend our warm congratulations to Dr. Kiyonga on this prestigious appointment and warmly welcome him to the service of Makerere University.” Nawangwe said.
As the chancellor, Dr. Kiyonga will preside over the institution’s graduation ceremony with his maiden being the January 2024 75th graduation ceremony.
Dr. Kiyonga previously served as Uganda’s Ambassador to China, based in Beijing. He also served as the Minister of Defence in the Cabinet of Uganda from 2006 to 2016.
He holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from Makerere University and a masters of health science in Population Dynamics from Johns Hopkins School of Public Health.
