A section of Makerere University students have today held a surprise party for the suspended MUASA chairperson, Dr. Deus Kamunyu Muhwezi. The party was spearheaded by the university’s guild clerk, Danson Twesigomwe who joined hands with fellow students to officially launch a campaign to stand in solidarity with Dr Kamunyu and the other suspended staff members as well as students.

During the party, Twesigomwe revealed that there is no more freedom of speech at the university as he added that it has become a norm for the university management to suspend their critics. The students thanked Kamunyu for defending his values and asked him to stand firm throughout this trying period.
In a statement released shortly after his suspension, Kamunyu said that his suspension letter was very vague, harsh, in bad faith and against all laws of Uganda.

“It even undermines my rights as a citizen to have access to my official home, public buildings and related services. The Letter unfairly portrays me as a criminal, but you know me better than that. In the circumstances, my lawyers, friends and all concerned citizens are studying the suspension details with a view of giving appropriate advice. My next step will be made known to you soon,” Kamunyu said in a statement.
Today, the students were holding placards at the same time wearing white caps with words reading “Where’s my suspension” as they chanted “Nawangwe must go” before presenting a cake to the suspended MAK Don.
