Towards the close of last semester, the guild of Uganda Christian University (UCU) circulated posters indicating that the Bazaar of the next academic year would be like no other. The ‘Pursue excellence’ government called it the “Grand Bazaar”
At the start of the semester this academic year, the students at the university did not seem to see any semblance of ‘grand’ but the basic for a long time until last night (7th September). Whereas other universities hold performances of artists on the last day of the bazaar, UCU could not hold the excitement, being a first timer.
For the first time in her history, the university held performances (gospel) during the bazaar, making this one quite a unique one.
The turn up at the ‘Grand Bazaar Explosion’ as it had been called, saw the wood ball pitch filled with numbers of students, fresh and continuing, who were eager to see the transformation of UCU Bazaar. The event that started at 6 did not have a huge population until 7:30 pm when the bazaar “exploded” with performances from many artists JK Shine, Don Zaabu, Fortune Spice, and Levixone who were brought to the university by Spirit FM, the sponsors of the night.
The outdoor event excited the students, especially the freshers who could not help but sing and dance along with some of the artists that evening. The students were impressed by the wit of King Wesley the emcee and Dr. Awar and Cue from the radio station who made the night what it was.
On the other hand, the bazaar during the day records higher turn ups compared to the previous semesters. Several service providers and business including insurance companies, banks, stationery shops, electronics among others are some of the business that were present to to trade their products. The bazaar will be ending on the 17th of September (Saturday Next weekend)
“The bazaar of UCU has never been like this. We set a record.” This was the excitement the guild officials, Mwine Samuel, and Biryomuriwe Apollo that organized the bazaar felt.
“The customers (the service and retailers at the bazaar) have appreciated the turn up at the bazaar” Mwine said.
One of the ladies dealing in electronics says this bazaar this semester is better compared to the previous semesters that she participated in.
