Insecurity has sky rocketed the Ivory Tower leaving unforgettable land marks on some freshers. One was left with scars on his head from a theft blood shed scuffle with Kifeesi guys, another female fresher was raped while the other is nursing a heart attack after being conned of tuition fees worth UGX2M.
Our team held a security exclusive with the Head Security operatives at the biggest public university in Uganda to keep the freshers awake.
According to the head of MAK security, Afande Jackson Mucunguzi, community policing might be the only way out of such cases- as students should be vigilant and be each other’s keeper.
“Start by knowing where your roommate is going,”- said ASP Jude Masingano the head of Police Operations at MAK.
However, with over 120 police men deployed at the Ivory Tower, the Police at Mak is still faced with geography and shortage of facilities, a reason Kifeesi guys defeat security and commit crimes.
It should be noted that Makerere University is surrounded by slums that harbor criminals all across its boarders. Katanga slum in the East, Kiwunya in the south, Kivulu, kalugube, the list is endless.
“If we are to ensure safety of all students, we should support Prof Tanga Odoi’s initiative to build a perimeter wall. It’s only then that we’ll guarantee 90% security to Makerere,” Afande Mucunguzi told Campus Bee.
He narrated about plans to work hand in hand with the administration to install more security lights in dark spots as most of the crimes are committed after sunset.
He warned freshers to be aware of magicians, well wishers, fraudsters, gamblers, conmen, middle-men, sugar daddies and sexual terrorists.
He also advised them to be mean with their ATM PINs and National Identification Numbers.
Fraudsters in form of scholarships, better marks, Gold, Business are so rampant at the Ivory tower. Before engaging in such business, Afande Mucunguzi availed his personal phone number for consultation- which is-0701400668.
“Stop putting on tempting and skimpy cloths. If you don’t have property, then the wolves are targeting you. They’ll chew you, moreover, for free”- Mucunguzi warned female freshers
