In a bid to find a lasting solution to Makerere woes, the visitation committee that was instituted by President Museveni has ordered for a head count of all students at the university so as to establish their actual number.
According to a letter issued out by Alfred Namoah Masikye, the academic registrar of Makerere, every student will be required to present him/herself for head counting which is scheduled for January 23, 2017, from their respective colleges at the designated venues.
A valid university identity card and an admission letter will be a prerequisite for continuing students while first years will have to carry their registration forms or admission letters and either their former secondary school or National Identity cards or both.
Students have been warned to fully cooperate with the counting team as those who will fall short of the requirements and consequently fail to get verified shall be deemed not to be students of Makerere and will instantly be purged from all university records.
Since time immemorial, the question of how many students are at Makerere had never been answered, with some officials at the university putting the number at 35000 while others saying it’s about 40,000. To solve Makerere woes, the chairman of the committee Dr Abel Rwendeire previously said, one needs to know the actual figure of students so as to establish how much money is collected per semester.
For the uninitiated, the Visitation committee consists of ten members and it was instituted by Museveni on November 14, 2016, to probe Makerere University problems that had culminated into a myriad of strikes by both students and the academic staff.
The Bee is buzzing and we shall keep you posted.
