Just a few minutes past 1am today, Makerere’s students were hit by a bombshell carrying news of the resignation of the resilient and flamboyant guild prime minister Jothan Yamureebire Burobuto.
This was just hours after the inauguration of a rather successful students’ guild forums that were officially launched by Democratic Party (DP) stalwart and former Makerere University guild president Hon Fred Mukasa Mbidde.
Burobuto, a law student, says the resignation should not cause alarm, explaining to Campus Bee that he has completed his student leadership race and therefore thought it wise to give way.
“I have been in student leadership since my first year. First as GRC School of Law, President Makerere Law Society, Guild Speaker of the 81st Guild, Acting Guild President February to September 2016 and lastly as Prime Minister,” he noted.
He acknowledges that through this whole service, he has made his fundamental contribution to the institution of the guild and the university at large and that his very last personal dream was to ensure that a “forum” through which students could interact with themselves and other stakeholders such as management, alumni and other public officials pertaining to issues that affect students.
“So I don’t think there is more I can offer to the students’ leadership and even though little time remains, perhaps a new Prime Minister could bring in newer ideas,” Burobuto said.
When asked about the situation in which he has left office with barely two months for his tenure to end, he was unapologetic but optimistic.
“The office of the prime minister is an institution and a structure not an individual and I am more than confident that the team will execute those projects diligently and efficiently,” he added.
He also revealed just a spoonful of his future plans and moves in retaliation to claims that maybe his actions were political stunts meant to boost him for guild president in the upcoming election.
“I think it’s high time I put in the towel regarding student leadership and perhaps look ahead to national or even regional leadership,” he said.
However, Burobuto maintained that for the the rest of the other fundamental issues that castigated his resignation, he had shared with the Guild president in confidence.
