Campus Bee has established that two-time former Makerere University Guild Speaker and former President of the Uganda National Students’ Association (UNSA) Jothan Yamurebire Burobuto has been appointed the Executive Director (ED) of the Uganda Youth Network (UYONET). Burobuto, a former aspirant in the 2021 Presidential elections is a qualified Lawyer from the School of Law at Makerere where he served them as Guild Representative Councilor (GRC) in his first year and President of the Makerere Law Society (MLS) in second year.
UYONET is a leading national umbrella organization for youth in Uganda whose membership is comprised of 31 youth focused organization and 158 youth member organizations. It was founded in 2003 as a collective platform for research, training and policy advocacy for “young people by young people.” Their mission, according to their website is “to build, empower and sustain a vibrant youth network through advocacy, coordination and capacity building.”
They have since 2003 made significant progress in attaining this mission and are currently at the apex of youth programming in Uganda, specifically in the areas of; policy advocacy, leadership development, youth participation in electoral democracy, strengthening coordination and joint efforts among youth associations. In addition, UYONET is now the natural reference point for the national youth agenda in Uganda.
Our sources within the organization have disclosed that Burobuto expressed interest in the position when it was advertised some months ago and was vetted. His experiences with young people and direct participation in advocacy and other programming areas of interest for UYONET like participation in electoral democracy are what helped him to land the role.
Under his new assignment, Burobuto will be reporting directly to the Board of Directors of the organization and will be supervising directly; the Head of Programs and the Head of Finance & Administration. The Executive Director is the key management leader of Uganda Youth Network (UYONET). He will be responsible for overseeing the administration, programs and strategic plan of the organization. Other key duties include fundraising, marketing, and community outreach.
He will also be responsible for implementing Board of Director’s decisions and ensuring that policies, organizational procedures and regulations are followed.
He is expected to provide strategic direction and overall leadership and be responsible for ensuring teamwork across the UYONET secretariat. He will oversee day-to-day management and administration of the secretariat, and be responsible for the preparation, management and accountability of all budgets, strategic plans, accounts and progress reports for approval by the Board, and also account for and manage staff and resources of the organization.
The Executive Director is also the secretary to the Board of Directors and along with the auditors, advises and ensures that the Board complies with all its regulatory obligations.
