The National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) has confirmed the accreditation and renewal of 18 programs effective August 2023.
Earlier this year, the country was in a backlash over a revelation that most institutions are offering expired programs – according to NCHE.
Appeals were made to the stakeholders to look through the matter and one of the measures was to review and re-accredit some programmes.
The latest development indicates that Makerere University has received good news regarding the issue.
“I am pleased to information you that after due consideration, Council at its 72nd Meeting of 21st August 2023 under MIN 553/72/2023, accredited the academic programmes indicated below for the specified admissible number of students and the stated period with effect from 21, August 2023,” a letter from NCHE read.
The programs include; Bachelor of Applied Psychology, Master of Medicine in Ophthalmology, Bachelor of Language and speech Therapy, Master of Veterinary Medicine, Master of Biomedical Laboratory Science and Management, Bachelor of Environment Health Sciences among others.
The regulatory body went ahead to remind Makerere University Vice Chancellor to urge the staff members to implement these programmes in accordance with the regulations of NCHE.
It should be remembered that under section 119(A) of the University and Other Tertiary Institutions Act 2001 as amended, an institution shall not run any academic programmes that have not been accredited by National Council for Higher Education (NCHE).
Officers of the NCHE shall review the implementation during their periodic administrative and monitoring visits to Makerere University.
