It is literally the dream of every social media user to have their accounts verified. The verified badge is even more significant in Uganda if one is on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram because that is where the most users in Uganda are.
The status is usually given to public figures especially celebrities and persons whose accounts are in public interest and need to be differentiated from any other that may be in their names. It is a true affirmation that indeed the person under which the blue tick or badge appears is the true person and not a robot or a parody.
One such lucky user is Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, the Vice Chancellor of Makerere University whose Facebook page “Barnabas Nawangwe” has been given the verified status. The Professor has been known to use his accounts to communicate some of the official messages from his office consequently growing his digital footprint by every tweet or post.
A few months ago, the professor was a topic of discussion online when suspended students said that they first saw their suspension letters on Twitter before actually receiving them. Like American president Donald Trump, the Professor treasures his social media and has ensured that he uses it to communicate to the millennials that constitute the greatest percentage of his student population.
He joins the university he heads among the very few verified academic accounts on Facebook. We congratulate the professor.
