Islamic University in Uganda Main campus Mbale has blocked the Facebook and Youtube channel from their Computer laboratories. The administration accuses students of spending hours on the social network, instead of doing other constructive things. They also believe that students use Facebook to hit on one another. During the computer sessions, three quarters of the population would be social networking. It is also believed that the ‘holy’ students were spending a lot of time streaming the UCU sextape on youtube, in a bid to learn new amateur skills.
However, the move has been criticized by most students including lecturers. Attempts to have the move revised have been futile, and majority of the students are now being forced to join the more upscale social network, twitter. Those who cannot keep up with twitter are using Facebook zero. Abubaker Matanda, the IUIU Guild President says ,“Due to limited bandwidth, the management committee took a decision to block all social sites like Facebook, YouTube among others in order to utilize the available bandwidth for research as efforts are made to increase the bandwidth which efforts are already in place.”
