It’s been a few weeks since internship started and many students are widely spread across the country and across various professions in a bid to acquire professional and 101 expertise about the things taught in the lecture room.
This week, Campusbee caught up with Modong Manuela Mogga a student of Mbarara University of science and technology doing her internship at Reproductive Health Uganda [RHU].
Modong Manuela Mogga was a Miss World contestant from South Sudan in 2013 who made it to the top 10 models in Indonesia.
Who is Modong Manuela Mogga?
I am a student at Mbarara University of science and technology pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Gender and Women’s Health. I hate being referred to as a feminist because of the course I take on, but I prefer being called a gender activist so as to capture both sexes as opposed to one sex.
Why did you choose RHU as your preferred internship place?
I believe Reproductive Health Uganda will enrich me with vast knowledge, information and skills on Sexual Reproductive Health and positive Sexuality so that I’m able to relate with my course and advocate for better health outcomes of women for instance Sexual Reproductive Health issues which affect women like early or teenage pregnancy, unsafe abortions, Fistula, Sexual Gender Based Violence, FGM, infertility and fertility management advocacy, STIs including AIDS, mobilization and networking.
How was your first day at your place of internship?
I have been under a lot of pressure from the day I left campus. I have been reading and tallying with what I want to learn from RHU. I woke up quite early but I still got mixed up in Uganda’s traffic and rush hour and I got to work at 8.30am. I was late, I was scared.
What did you learn in your first day at your place of internship?
I attended an orientation and introduction session which allowed for self-reflection between the school or class environment and the work place which really triggered my mind to adjust to the new work place environment, for the first time, I was exposed to a sexual reproductive health questionnaire and I saw questions I have never set my eyes on, it was a challenge but I’m looking forward to learning more and overcoming different challenges at the work place.
What do you expect to learn?
I expect to acquire correct and accurate Sexual Reproductive Health information to enhance positive behaviour change within myself, peers and mostly to women’s health, equip myself with different advocacy methods towards gender practices that perpetuate reproductive health and rights. I also expect to learn how to do community approaches that is mobilization and resource mobilization and to broaden and enhance knowledge about Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights [SRHR] through which I shall be able to raise awareness.
