Authorities in Mbarara City are investigating the sudden death of a first-year student at Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST), whose lifeless body was discovered in her hostel room on Tuesday, January 28, 2025.
The deceased, identified as Nahwera Prossy, a 20-year-old Business Administration student, was found unresponsive in her bed at Hope Hostels, located in Kiswahiri Cell, Kakoba Ward. According to reports, Nahwera had returned from holiday on January 26 and was last seen alive by her roommate, Atuhaire Leticia, on the night of January 27. Before retiring to bed, Nahwera informed her roommate that she would not be attending lectures the following day.
The next morning, Leticia attempted to wake Nahwera but received no response. Assuming she was in deep sleep, Leticia left for her lectures at MUST. Upon returning at around 3:00 PM, she found Nahwera still in bed. After several failed attempts to wake her, Leticia alerted neighbors and the hostel landlord, who immediately contacted medical officers. Upon arrival, the medical team confirmed Nahwera’s death.
Police Investigation Underway
Officers from the Rwizi Regional Police at Central Police Station (CPS) Mbarara were called to the scene to document and investigate the circumstances surrounding Nahwera’s sudden death. According to preliminary findings, there were no visible signs of violence or physical injuries on the body, which was discovered lying in a supine position, dressed in a flowered nightdress, and covered with a bedcover.
Following the investigation, police conveyed the body to Mbarara Regional Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
