Five things we learnt from the Makerere University strike

Makerere university students are diehards

The hunger projected on Tuesday night, the unwavering attitude carried on by all students amidst police brutality, tear gas stings, rubber bullets and in light of live ammunition. The students relentlessly stood by their guns. They refused to give up. Ultimately they won the war regardless of the various battles lost to police including losing their home grounds turned to police play grounds. The sweat, the tears, the blood, the running ; price of victory. If only they had the same attitude towards academics…if only.

Uganda police has mastered the art of beating strikes

The son’s of Kayihura aren’t the proverbial brainless – teargas hurling nit wits that police was known for, the current lot of cops is a force to reckon with. It’s no easy task to seal of the dens of renowned vagabonds at night: hold guard till morning and beat the university students at their game. The cops had the tactical advantage when they arrested suspected ring leaders, especially hall leaders at Mitchell and Lumumba, this invariably was the game changer. The priceless espionage easily nipped the strike in the bud. The decision to confine students inside halls of residence was the final blow. Their other tactic was the element of SURPRISE; boarding the police trucks as though to depart only for them to return moments later with sirens silent, catching unaware students who’d been fooled by the mock departure out onto the open This element resulted in the arrest of quite a number of students . You need to give it to them, these crop of cops is good.

Makerere students are strategic target workers

Is it not a matter of convenience that students decide to strike in the face of fast approaching tests? It is feared strikes are a way of buying reading time after wasting the entire weeks of the semester sinning. Crafty students mount barricades and stage road blocks, each passing vehicle is charged an amount in what is called the akatwalo campaign. The fees accepted are from 10,000ugshs over. Indeed man eateth where he worketh. Others always make it their business to target road side stalls in kikoni and Kikumi kikumi and loot anything edible. The cafeteria at Africa hall has always fallen prey to Muk students’ food raiding and looting ways.

Ddumba is infallible

Clearly one of the most insulted men alive, songs filled with the most obscene of vulgarities are directed towards him, and his female family members. It calls for certain level of madness to diligently serve people who want you dead regardless of the fact up to 80% have never laid eyes upon you. Ddumba’s attitude isn’t from these lands. It is nearly devilish. The nonchalance he projects is, ‘Strike, all you may, sing for all I care, I’ll stay put. Call me Illuminati, it is well with my soul.’ You can’t bring down such a man. You can’t.

Makerere is full of Ninjas

Video evidence captured various student donning face masks, setting tyres alight walking through tear gas like seasoned warriors.. Why would a reasonable student carry a face mask to school unless to wreck havoc. Policemen wielding guns couldn’t explain the sources of flying rocks, they’d only see flying rocks landing at them. There are hardly any ladies in Makerere, girls at Makerere hurl stones like they’re training for Al-queda recruitment. Girls don closed shoes, tight pants and sports bras they readily climb trees and break off branches like trained monkeys. True Ninja behaviour. Who grew Makerere university students, ISIS?
