Makerere University Business School (MUBS) students residing at Ideal Platinum Hostel in Nakawa were left stranded following severe flooding on the hostel premises.
The flooding, which occurred on Tuesday morning, was caused by heavy rainfall that overwhelmed the drainage systems in the area, leading to significant water accumulation in the lower floors of the hostel.
Eyewitnesses reported that the flooding started in the early morning hours, with water levels rising rapidly and submerging the hostel’s rooms.
Many students had to evacuate their belongings and seek shelter elsewhere, with some relying on friends in neighboring hostels or temporary accommodations.
According to residents, the inadequate drainage system and poor infrastructure development around the hostel contributed to the flooding.
The hostel management, who preferred anonymity, expressed concerns about the situation and promised to work with local authorities to resolve the issue and prevent future incidents.
However, students voiced frustrations, citing repeated flooding issues during the rainy seasons.
“The leaders of MUBS and off-campus residences should do something about our damaged electronics—TVs, pacos, phones—and muddy clothes, or at least refund us some 500,000 UGX,” one student was overheard saying in disbelief.
Meanwhile, we will continue to monitor how the situation unfolds however, affected students have been advised to stay in temporary accommodations until the water subsides and repairs are made to the damaged areas.
No injuries were reported, but the flooding caused significant damage to personal property and disrupted the academic schedule for several students.
