Makerere University has been opened on a very sad gastronomical note to both the students and staff fraternity. Just two days after its re-opening, food points within campus are getting demolished by the estates department on orders from the university council.
Most of these food kiosks and restaurants are located behind Livingstone hall, Lumumba hall and behind the university police station. The others are behind different colleges, in staff quarters and most of them are owned my non-teaching staff.
These food joints have been famous for offering food at cheaper prices with a plate ranging from Shs 1500 to 2500.
According to some of the students, food served from these points has been much better than that provided by the five official serving joints.
At the beginning of this academic year, 2016/2017, there were numerous demonstrations by students protesting what they termed as poor quality food served in halls of residence.
Demolishing these kiosks literally means more students will flock the 5 dinning halls and out do their capacities.
“Most students had already paid to eat in these restaurants for a full semester. What alternatives has prof Ddumba given?” asked Doreen Nyanjura the LCV councilor Makerere University who vowed, on the Guild Facebook page, to hold a meeting with the affected parties and fight for them.
The university hasn’t come out yet to explain to the students and staff fraternity why this move is being effected, but as Campus Bee, we are already on the ground and we shall run an exclusive story that gets to the bottom line of this demolition.
