Belinda Amanya, the 21st vice guild president at Gulu University has been elected as the 6th speaker at the East African Youth parliament.
The East African Youth Parliament covened in Arusha, Tanzania for the Vijana general assembly, during which they elected new leaders.
Amanya is one of the lucky winners having defeated two opponents to become the sixth speaker. Amanya (Uganda) defeated Tombe Saviour (South Sudan) and Maugisha Casimile (Rwanda)
Belinda Amanya garnered 26 votes while Tombe got 18 votes and Maugisha had only nine (9) votes cast in his favour. Amanya succeeds Brian Odero (Kenyan) who has been serving as the fifth speaker. By default, Tombe Saviour became the parliament’s deputy speaker.
Amanya chaired her first session as speaker as the house discussed sexual health reproduction and strengthening governance within the region for the youth.
The session was graced by Uganda’s ambassador to Tanzania Hon. Anne Katusiime Kageye and the speaker of the East African Legislative Assembly Rt. Hon. Joseph Ntakirutumana.
