Former Makerere University Guild President Julius Kateregga has been given a green light by the National Unity Platform (NUP) to contest as an independent in the KCCA speakership race. NUP, which already has Makindye Councillor Zahara Luyiika as their flag bearer has made a U-turn and allowed the youthful politician to join the race.
Kateregga, who also doubles as Makerere Lord councilor will also be running against Rubaga North’s Hakim Kizza, Counsel Jeremiah Keeya Mwanje as well as NUP’s Luyiika.
Sources from NUP indicate that Luyiika’s political career was tainted with a lot of voter bribery and suspected funding from the ruling government, leaving them with no option but to stand behind Kateregga.
“She testified against Lukwago during the Bamugemereire commission that ousted Lukwago in the first term and denied the people of Kampala great leadership,” a source in the NUP Secretary General disclosed.
“She later received money which was used to buy out NUP councillors to win the Speakership position. It is upon such background that we silently seconded Kateregga to run as an independent,” The source added.
More details indicate that NUP believes in Kateregga to build bridges between the different political affiliations with in the KCCA council which their “rebel flag bearer” cannot do.
