Mukono, Uganda — Former Makerere University Guild President Robert Maseruka of the National Unity Platform (NUP) has been declared the winner of the Mukono South parliamentary race, defeating incumbent Fred Kayondo of the Democratic Party (DP) in a tightly watched contest.
According to official results released by the Electoral Commission, Maseruka secured 19,621 votes, while Kayondo garnered 11,895 votes, handing the opposition NUP a decisive victory in a constituency known for rejecting incumbents.
Speaking shortly after his declaration, an emotional Maseruka welcomed the victory but expressed concern over what he described as unnecessary delays in the tallying and declaration of results.
“The people of Mukono South spoke clearly. While I am grateful for this mandate, the delays we witnessed were worrying and could undermine public confidence in the electoral process,” Maseruka said.
Mukono South has, over the years, built a reputation for political turnover, with voters consistently declining to return sitting Members of Parliament for a second term — a trend that continued with Kayondo’s defeat.
Maseruka, a former student leader at Makerere University and a prominent youth mobiliser within NUP, rode on a campaign centred on accountability, service delivery, and youth inclusion. His win further strengthens NUP’s presence in the central region and underscores the growing influence of former student leaders transitioning into national politics.
Supporters poured onto the streets of Mukono town to celebrate the victory, chanting party slogans and hailing Maseruka as a symbol of generational change.
Political analysts say the outcome reflects voter fatigue with traditional political establishments and a growing appetite for youthful leadership, particularly in urban and peri-urban constituencies.
The Electoral Commission has not commented on the concerns raised over the delay, but officials maintained that all procedures were followed in accordance with electoral laws.
As he prepares to take his seat in Parliament, Maseruka pledged to remain accountable to his constituents and to champion the issues that propelled him to victory.
“This victory belongs to the people of Mukono South. I will serve with humility, courage, and unwavering commitment,” he said.
