The National Unity Platform (NUP) has officially named Shamim Nambassa, a former Guild President of Makerere University, as its flagbearer for Woman Councillor LC5 in Kawempe South.
Nambassa, who once made headlines as the 87th Guild President of Makerere, confirmed the news in a post on X (formerly Twitter), writing: “Ladies and gentlemen, thank you all for supporting and praying for us. We are the official @NUP_Ug flagbearers for Woman Councillor LC5 Kawempe South.”
The 27-year-old pharmacist, originally from Butambala, carries a strong leadership record into the race. The daughter of the late Mugalula Abdul and Twerebe Media, she built her profile early, rising from head prefect at Nabisunsa Girls’ School in 2017 to Makerere Guild President in 2021.
At the university, she was first elected as a representative for the School of Health Sciences in the Guild Council, later appointed Academic Affairs Minister in 2021, before breaking barriers as Guild President — only the fifth woman to hold the role in Makerere’s century-long history.
Her academic journey began at Parental Care School before moving to Nabisunsa Girls for both O- and A-levels, later graduating with a Bachelor of Pharmacy from Makerere University.
NUP yesterday released its full slate of flagbearers across the country for the upcoming local government elections, with Nambassa’s name topping the list for Kampala’s Kawempe South.
Her nomination is already stirring excitement among the party’s youthful base, many of whom remember her spirited campus campaigns.
