The former 84th Guild President of Makerere University Papa Were Salim has found himself at the center of a social media storm after posting a lighthearted tweet that some critics have deemed unbecoming of a person of his stature.
The tweet in question described a humorous encounter with a cow (since Papa Were graduated with a degree in veterinary studies) that seemed to mimic a song lyric, leading to mixed reactions on X (formerly Twitter)
The tweet read: “This cow surprised us. We were listening to hozambe on a ki speaker as we worked on it but when it reached that part of embuzi zekabya, the cow said ‘meeeee’ we all ran away 🤣🤣🤣🙌”.
While the post was intended to share a funny moment, it sparked criticism from some users who felt it was beneath the former student leader to engage in such trivial social media chatter.
One firery comment came from a user who stated, “With all due respect Mr. Were, don’t you find this ashaming that as a former guild president of @Makerere university and considering all that’s happening in the country and the world, you come here and talk of cows bleating? Really??? And I’ve looked at most of your posts.”
Other users, however, tagged along the joke and didn’t mind if it was worthy Were’s attention or not.

The backlash highlights the ongoing debate about the influence of young Ugandans compared to their Kenyan counterparts on and off social media, especially those who have held significant positions of leadership.
Hozambe, the song referenced in the former guild president’s tweet, has been trending in Uganda for the past few months.
It includes a humorous line about goats and has sparked memes, challenges, and widespread discussion online.
