Lenia Charity Kevin, the former Vice Guild President of Makerere University Business School (MUBS), has sparked a significant debate on social media after announcing her decision to switch allegiance from Uganda’s opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party. This unexpected move comes as Lenia gears up for a bid to become the Member of Parliament representing Vurra County in Arua District in the upcoming 2026 elections.
Lenia Charity’s political journey first gained attention in 2023 when she ran for MUBS Guild President under the NUP banner, although she was ultimately defeated by Christopher Wasswa. Despite the loss, her role as Vice Guild President at the Nakawa-based school had already established her as a notable figure among young politicians.
Her decision to join the NRM, the party of incumbent MP Yovan Adriko, has raised eyebrows, particularly among those familiar with her previous ties to the opposition. However, Lenia seems resolute in her choice, expressing her commitment to serving the Vurra community. In a recent statement, she acknowledged the mixed reactions to her decision:
“Some of you may feel betrayed. I understand and appreciate your loyalty to NUP. However, I’d like to assure you that my commitment to serving our Vurra community remains unwavering. I’m willing to listen and learn from your perspectives, and I hope we can find common ground.”
Lenia’s LinkedIn profile reflects her active involvement in various advocacy roles, including her work as an advocacy strategist for the Refugee Women Leaders Network, program coordinator at Gals Forum International, and youth representative on the World Liberty Congress. These roles underscore her dedication to social issues, particularly those affecting marginalized communities.
A former student of St. Mary’s S.S. Namaliga and Our Lady of Africa Mukono, Lenia holds a Bachelor of Procurement and Supply Chain Management from MUBS. In a 2023 interview with New Vision, she was described as a mentor, philanthropist, and motivational speaker, and she shared her personal story of being raised by a single mother.
