In a stunning twist of events, a former highly visible candidate running for the presidency of Mbarara University’s student guild has become embroiled in a scandal linked to examination malpractice. This candidate, who had sought the highest student leadership role on campus, was apprehended red-handed with a mobile phone inside an examination room.
Gumisiriza Jusper Wendo, who had recently secured the second position in the fiercely contested university elections, remains vividly etched in the memory of the campus community for his impressive campaign. Despite a closely fought competition, he narrowly missed clinching victory.
Before this incident, the accused candidate had earned a reputation on campus for his spirited participation in the elections, accompanied by pledges of positive transformations within the university community. He had garnered substantial support from students who viewed him as a prospective leader capable of addressing a myriad of student concerns.
The revelation of this examination malpractice occurred during a routine examination session. The university authorities, committed to upholding an equitable and honorable academic atmosphere, had implemented stringent measures to curb cheating during exams. These measures included mandatory mobile phone inspections before candidates entered the examination halls.
During an unexpected inspection, the candidate was found in possession of a mobile phone, a clear violation of the strict prohibition against electronic devices within examination rooms.
News of the candidate’s involvement in examination malpractice rapidly disseminated across the campus and through social media channels. Both students and faculty expressed profound disappointment and astonishment at the candidate’s actions, particularly in light of their aspirations for the highest student leadership position.
Former Guild president Bill Clinton weighed in, stating, “I remember advising Jusper Wendo to prioritize his studies over post-election politics, where he persistently demanded accountability for the Trust Fund, a venture that the current Guild continues to uphold.” Clinton cited this as one of the reasons he believed Jasper was involved in malpractice.
As per the University’s examination rules outlined in section 6.2, students are strictly prohibited from entering examination rooms with unauthorized materials, including phones. Violators of this rule can potentially face severe penalties, including expulsion from the University.
Jusper Gumisiriza’s future now hangs in the balance, pending a decision from the University Senate.
