In a stretch of events, what started out as any normal election erupted and turned into those nursery baby scuffles?
Former UCU guild president Phillip Baitwa has come out to challenge the results from the just concluded alumni elections terming the whole election process a scam.
“This whole election process was a scam from the very beginning however much we tried to solve this problem legally and by the jurisdictions of the association’s constitution.” Baitwa said in a phone interview.
He continues to stress and affirm that there wasn’t any lucid voting register nor a trusted appointed electoral commission body to preside over the elections.
“The publically selected electoral commissioners to preside over the elections couldn’t be trusted since they too have a side they voted for.” Baitwe exasperated
He also noted that their was a secret corruption network, a linkage between the his opponent old boy David Alira Opi who doubles as the out-going secretary general and the out-going president, Paul Amuru former guild president (2006 -2007). This is why the out going president continuously publically endorsed and stood behind David’s back yet the guild president is supposed to stay neutral.
Estranged Baitwa has threatened to pursue legal action in the high court if both the association’s general assembly and the university doesn’t solve this issue by the boundaries of the law as stipulated in the constitution.
However the association’s General Secretary, Oboth Julius has come out and disregarded Baitwa’s claims as feeble.
“I think it was just admitting defeat which was a problem. The association has its own constitution which I think guides us,” Oboth noted in an interview.
He further noted that the randomly picked electoral commissioners to preside over the elections was legal and under the realm of the constitution.
“The electoral commission is appointed from the assembly members as the constitution states it and that’s what happened. they accepted the electoral commission, it wasn’t for the winners of rulers but the General Assembly members present.
Oboth refutes Baitwa’s voter register claims confirming to the public that Chairperson Sylvia was taking note of all voters and will soon deliver the total voter count once the documents are released by police.
Last Saturday was the General Assembly for the Uganda Christian University Alumni Association elections where David Alira Opii emerged winner with 108 votes beating Baitwa Phillip who landed himself 46 votes while Bogere Travis got only 5 votes and two were declared invalid. David Alira Opii was announced victor under tight security protection from the police. This is because voters loyal to Baitwa were rioting and protesting against the results.
