Four candidates including NRM’s Boniface Mbabazi have been thrown out of the 2014 guild election race at Makerere University for lack of academic qualification.
Others include; Emmanuel Wanyama and Faisal Muyiga both from the School of Adult and Community Education, and Emmanuel Murungi from the School of Languages, Literature and Communication.
All these candidates are in their second year of study at the university.
Two others Ivan Bwowe (Law) and Andrew Mujinya (ICT) have been given up to tomorrow to have their fate determined.
The race is now left with eight candidates without queries; UYD’s Sarah Aseru, Philip Musiime (Independent) Julius Tabaaro (Independent) and Eddy Kintu (Independent).
Others are; Lillian Aber (Independent), Sam Bamakech (Independent), Nicholas Nanyenya (Independent).
While speaking in an interview shortly after verifying with the Academic Registrar, the electoral commission’sGeneral Secretary Harris Justus Akampurira told our reporter their (EC) security is wanting and that the administration should provide them with extra protection.
“Our security is now not guaranteed since we have thrown out candidates some of whom are from major Parties,” a seemingly terrified Ankampurira said.
He added that the administration should step in to ensure their safety.
Akampurira also said that the two whose fate is pending will be allowed to campaign for today and whoever fails to meet the standard will be disqualified come tomorrow, 4th March 2014.
Our efforts to reach the disqualified candidates were futile by press time as no one would readily pick our calls.
