The University of Nairobi senate has today morning ordered all students to vacate the halls of residence and hostels by 9am. This was an emergency directive taken to calm the 1 week violent situation that engulfed the university and left over 27 students injured.
“UON senate has today closed the University with immediate effect due to the deteriorating security situation. Students have been asked to vacate the halls of residence with immediate effect but not later than 9.00am,” read a tweet from the institution’s handle.
The situation got out of hand when the students accused their Vice Chancellor, Professor Peter Mbithi for inviting the police to mishandle and torture them as they took part in the Opposition Pro-Reform activists’ demonstration that took place at the Central Park that neighbors with the University.
Off they went to block near by roads including the road to State House and burning security offices demanding for the release of a former student leader, the MP for Embakai East, Babu Owino.
According to eye witnesses, Para-Military units stormed seminar rooms at the faculty of architecture, design and development and shot two students who were writing their end of semester examinations. Professor Robert Rukwaro who was supervising the examination was also left critically injured with fractured limbs.
Another lecturer Joseph Kamenju was beaten black and blue together with 10 other students. Kenyan Police however denies the 4 death casualties.
