Ugandan Universities have sent off their contingent of students to represent the country at the World University Games (summer games) in Italy. Among these universities are, Ndejje University, Makerere University, Uganda Christian University, Kyambogo and Bugema University.
This year’s World University Games is the 30th of such event and will bring together over 2,000 participants from across 50 nations to compete in various sporting activities. This year’s edition of the summer games will take place in Napoli, Italy.
Among the 26 student participants from Uganda include students to participate in swimming, 1500m race, and chess among other activities. Ndejje University and UCU which have been the sports powerhouses for many years however sent in majority of the participants. Among these include, Ajok Dorcus – 1500m athlete (Ndejje University), Aciro Knight – 5000m athlete from Ndejje and Racheal Galinda a swimmer among others.
While flagging off the contingent over the week, the Vice Chancellor of Makerere University encouraged the participants to lift the Uganda flag high by winning all in categories and exhibit discipline while at the venue.
“Work to win a gold medal in every category you are in. Also, maintain your discipline while there and remember not to get lost at the venue. Return to Uganda safe and sound,” Prof Nawangwe said at the flag of ceremony that took place at Makerere University.
However, some universities were not able to place their participants in the team because of their inability to sail through and emerge the best in overall past university games. Participants from Uganda who in this case are students from Ugandan universities will majorly tussle it out in track/ field games, swimming and Tennis.
Uganda is only sending 26 participants plus a few coaching team members as contrary to the earlier communicated 36 board participants. The World University games will commence on the 3rd of July 2019 and will run till the final closing ceremony on 14th July, 2019.
