Makerere University has congratulated 12 of its former staff members and alumni who emerged victorious in the 2026 national elections, hailing their success as a powerful affirmation of the institution’s enduring contribution to leadership, public service and national development.
In a press statement issued on January 27, 2026, through the Office of the Vice Chancellor and Public Relations Office, the university described the electoral victories as a source of immense pride and evidence of Makerere’s commitment to nurturing not only academic excellence but also democratic values, free expression and responsible leadership.
“ Their success is a strong affirmation of Makerere’s efforts to nurture leadership and public service,” the statement read, adding that the institution’s impact continues to extend beyond academia into national governance and civic life.
Among those elected is Dr. Kiyonga Crispus Walter, the Chancellor of Makerere University, who was elected Member of Parliament for Bukonzo West, as well as Mr. Kabaasa Bruce Balaba, Chair of the Finance, Planning, Administration and Investment Committee of the University Council, who won the Rubanda County West parliamentary seat.
The list also features prominent former student leaders, including Mr. Alionzi Lawrence, a former Guild President, elected Lord Mayor of Arua City, and Mr. Maseruka Robert, another former Guild President, elected MP for Mukono South.
Other winners include Mr. Gyaviira Lubowa Ssebina, former Deputy Bursar, elected MP for Nyendo–Mukungwe; Prof. Lubega George Willy, former staff at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources and Biosecurity (CoVAB), elected MP for Bugangaizi South; and Prof. Ahebwa Wilber Manyisa, formerly of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES), elected MP for Nakaseke North.
The university also celebrated the re-election and election of several former student leaders to Parliament, including Hon. Adeke Anna Ebaju (Soroti District Woman MP), Hon. Onekalit Denis Amere (Kitgum Municipality), Hon. Karuhanga Gerald (Ntungamo Municipality), Hon. Aber Lillian (Kitgum District Woman MP), and Hon. Nyamutoro Phiona (Nebbi District Woman MP).
Makerere University emphasized that it values dialogue, democracy and responsible citizenship, noting that it will continue to deliberately promote participation in leadership and governance at all levels.
“We are confident they will serve with dedication, wisdom and integrity,” the statement concluded.
The announcement reinforces Makerere University’s longstanding reputation as a breeding ground for national leaders and a key contributor to Uganda’s democratic and governance landscape under its enduring motto: “We Build for the Future.”
