For many campus girls, finding a hairdresser who could deliver both quality and affordability was almost a prayer and changing hairstyles as often as they wished was a luxury few could afford, until one creative stylist understood their struggle. Nabila Nasubuga, a talented hairdresser at Sass and Class Salon in Wandegeya, introduced the Afro-kinky braids, an elegant, durable, and budget-friendly style that quickly became a campus sensation. Her innovation quickly earned her a loyal following, making her the go-to stylist and a beloved name among university girls.She started her from a make-shift saloon without much going on, and for the last 15 years, her business has progressed to be one of the biggest and most popular saloons around Wandegeya. She has not only built a business but a community by training and mentoring countless young women in hairdressing, many of whom have gone on to open their own salons or join her team. And through her work, she’s been able to achieve a lot, from expanding her business to investing in rentals and also building herself a decent home.
“I started with very little, just a few tools, two chairs, and my skill. I owe my success to the campusers who have greatly supported me over the years” Nabila says smiling from ear to ear.
As Uganda Waragi embarked on its So UG So 60 campaigns aimed at appreciating Ugandan unsung heroes to celebrate its 60th birthday, Nabila’s creativity and generosity couldn’t be missed, as it embodied the unique Ugandan spirit of generosity and hard work, and hence rewarded her with a fridge that was delivered to her saloon to boast her business.While receiving her token of appreciation, Nabila was visibly overjoyed and short of words.
“I couldn’t believe it; this has made me feel that my work is seen and appreciated. Thank you Uganda Waragi. I am speechless!” she smiles. When asked how this gift would impact her business she added “I plan to use it to grow my business by selling soft drinks for my customers, which I believe will make them even more comfortable.”
While handing over the gift, Hillary Baguma, Brand Manager for Mainstream Spirits at Uganda Breweries said Nabila embodies what it means to be So UG.“Nabila’s story is the perfect example of what it means to be So UG. She’s built something from nothing, helped others along the way, and keeps dreaming bigger, and as Uganda Waragi we want to show them that we see them and we appreciate their hard work in making lives better for us Ugandans.”
And as Uganda Waragi commemorates its 60th birthday, its not just a celebration of longevity and being the people’s favourite but recognizing everyday Ugandans like Nabila, whose hands and hearts keep the country’s true spirit alive, making other’s lives easier through their services and yet seldomly recognised.
