From Raggedy Roads to Tarmacked Roads, a Story we Shall Tell

I don’t know if I should start from the days your parents and grandparents used to tell you about or from what you the baby boomer and millennial have seen. The effort by the NRM government to improve and set up new infrastructure is an achievement we cannot under look and yet, some of you chose to. Let’s talk road network today.

I want you to think back for a minute to how roads were years ago and how they are today. You are probably thinking which ones? Let me help you see it.

This season- the Christmas season is one of the people’s favorite and it’s been characterized by long distance travelling, which journeys today are enjoyable than they were many years ago. Let’s take for example the Mubende-Kakumiro-Kibaale-Kagadi road network that has recently been completed. For long traveling from the rural district of Kibaale to Kampala through Mubende was a nightmare. Kibaale to Mubende a distance of 104km, would take 2 days in the 1980s and reaching Kampala would require a minimum of three days. You think I’m making this up? Ask your grandmother. Today, however, with the new road, the journey takes three hours.

This has been a similar situation in the different parts of the country. In western Uganda alone, think of the Kyenjojo-Fortportal road, Fortportal-Ntoroko-Bundibugyo road,Ishaka-Katunguru road, Kasese – Mbarara highway, Mitooma-Kashenyi-Ishaka road, Rukungiri-Kihihi-Kanungu road, Ntungamo-Mirama road, Mbarara-Katuna road et al. If I were to mention all roads improved upon across the country, I could go on and on and on.

It’s very important to have good roads because they boost trade with neighboring countries as many of these roads serve as transit routes for both trade and tourism, transporting goods to major markets by farmers in the different villages, heck yeah you can also enjoy your road trip better and take those “on the road” selfies with no worry whatsoever. We need to appreciate the efforts of the movement.

If you or your parents hadn’t secured this future many years ago, you probably wouldn’t be enjoying all these nice things that have come with it but since you did it before, you can do it again. Secure your future and buckle up for the good that’s coming for you and for our country.
