A Kyambogo University student has written an emotional message to the 18th Guild Government pleading that the Guild Representative Councilors and Guild President stand up for students and support the suspension of surcharges ( late payment fees).
The fare in question is charged on students who make late tuition payments.
Recently, the charging of late payment fees of shs. 50,000 was extended from the sixth week to the eighth week of the semester.
The fact that the semester was extended by a month saw the date from which the surcharge would take effect being pushed to 29th July 2022.
This has however not excited the students at all as some of them want the surcharges completely suspended at least for this semester.
In his letter, the student argues that it’s difficult for parents and guardians to find such large amounts of tuition amidst the difficult economic situation characterized by inflation that the country is currently facing.
The fact that the semester has been extended by a month makes him very anxious about the increased food costs bearing in mind that food prices are escalating day by day.
He seems deeply bothered by the fact that on top of all these worrying foreseen expenses, he will still have to pay the surcharges in case he finds the money needed for tuition after 29th July 2022.
He begs the 18th Guild government to stand up for and represent the students by asking the concerned stakeholders of the university to suspend the surcharges, at least for now.
