Retired Brigadier General Emmanuel Rwashande has earned a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and Diplomacy with First-Class Honors from Nkumba University, marking a significant milestone in his academic and professional journey.
The achievement was officially recognized during Nkumba University’s 27th Graduation Ceremony held on Saturday at the university’s main campus in Entebbe. The event was graced by Deputy Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, senior government officials, military officers, and entertainment personalities.
More than 2,000 graduands received degrees, diplomas, and certificates across various disciplines in a colorful ceremony that celebrated academic excellence and resilience.
Speaking moments after being conferred his degree, an elated Rwashande attributed his success to discipline, determination, and consistency.
“Even at my age, the thirst for knowledge never fades,” he said with a smile. “I read late into the night and never missed any class or coursework.”
The retired army officer humorously added, “My experience has even caused my school to come and start giving lectures.”
Rwashande’s academic triumph comes at a time when he is positioning himself as a potential contender for the Lwemiyaga County parliamentary seat, currently held by Hon. Theodore Ssekikubo. His latest achievement strengthens his profile, especially after facing public scrutiny in past election cycles regarding the authenticity of his academic qualifications.
Previously, the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) was drawn into controversy after validating Rwashande’s military training as equivalent to a Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE). His successful completion of a degree at Nkumba University now appears to put those concerns to rest.
Also among the standout graduates was singer and Presidential Advisor on Kampala Affairs, Catherine Kusasira, who earned the same degree in International Relations and Diplomacy.
Kusasira, visibly emotional during the ceremony, described her journey as both challenging and rewarding.
“Balancing music, public duties, and lectures wasn’t easy, but God has been faithful. This degree is proof that it’s never too late to learn,” she said.
Nkumba University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Jude Lubega, commended the graduates for their resilience, urging them to use their skills and knowledge to contribute meaningfully to Uganda’s development.
“Education is a continuous journey. What matters most is how you apply what you’ve learned to create positive change in your communities,” Prof. Lubega said.
As confetti filled the air and families celebrated, the achievements of Brig. Gen. Rwashande and Ms. Kusasira stood out as powerful reminders that education has no age limit — and that determination, discipline, and purpose remain key drivers of success.
