On Thursday, the campaigns for various posts were closed with a Presidential debate hosted by Tumwesigye Jordan (Former President of Makerere Law Society) as the Chief Panelist which attracted the participation of the three Candidates Lutaaya Allan Mark, Wooli Gerald and Nakibinge Shafiq (the ladies’ favorite). To our disappointment, this debate came to a premature end as the students were bounced out of Nkoyoyo hall as it the administration said it was late (9:30pm) and the students had to go and sleep. This was met with great anguish from the students who for a while refused to get out of Nkoyoyo hall. The Chief Panelist found this laughable and was heard asking, “But why do they treat U.C.U. students like Primary School chaps?”
Moving on, pressure mounted yesterday at 8am as the voting commenced. Key to note, this Election was heavily boycotted by majority of the First-Year law students who still felt aggrieved by the manner in which their Candidate Turinawe Bayern was vetted out of the race for Law Society President.
Voting went on until 5pm when the vote counting was officially launched by the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Asiimwe Daudi starting with declaration of winners for other positions and President last.
Shock hit the faces of many when Wooli Gerald who seemed to be the underdog to Lutaaya Mark’s camp won the race for the highest office in the Law Society. Despite having a poor Candidacy Record after having tried and failed numerous times to emerge victor in the races for various posts including; Member of Parliament and State Attorney, the President Elect Wooli Gerald did not give up and adopted better strategies which perhaps won him the Election with 291 votes as compared to Lutaaya Allan Marks 240 votes. Moral Story; “Never Give Up”.
Winners for the other positions were, Alinda Patra (Vice President), Speaker (Mukwaya Ivan), Ashra Mafabi (Deputy Speaker), Tumwebaze Edith Ananda (Academics Secretary), Khanani Daniella (Deputy Academics Secretary), Birungi Bruno (Finance Secretary), Mirembe Barbra (Organizing Secretary), Twijukye Dalton (Deputy Organizing Secretary), Naluwairo Joel (Publicity Secretary), Nangonzi Harriet Evelyn (Deputy Publicity Secretary)
