Prof. Mary Okwakol, the National Council for Higher Education Executive Director has issued guidelines on the reopening of higher institutions of learning. According to a letter addressed to all higher institutions that Campus Bee has seen, universities should give priority to first-year students while planning to reopen on 1st November.
Okwakol explained that institutions should give priority to freshers to create room for new entrants with focus on programmes that have heavy hands-on content.
The NCHE boss further directed institutions to prepare and submit their reopening programmes (in a staggered manner) with a clear focus on adhering to the Ministry of Health Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
“In preparation to bring students on campus, priority should be given to first-year students so as to create room for new entrants with focus on study programmes that have heavy hands-on content.” Okwakol’s letter reads in part.
She further urged institutions that were approved to teach online to continue at the same time advised others to invite NCHE to approve their online teaching and learning platforms.
Several universities including Kyambogo had already set reopening dates without indicating what students should report first. Campus Bee understands that these universities were planning to reopen normally.
